Three days in Zhangjiajie, and how to spend the third one

Three days is the length this trip actually wants. Two of them belong to the national forest park, and the third belongs to a decision.

Days 1 and 2 — the forest park

Unchanged from the two-day route: in by the eastern gate, up the Bailong Elevator to Yuanjiajie, across the ridge to Tianzi Mountain, down by its cable car. Second day on the valley floor at Golden Whip Stream and Ten-Mile Gallery.

The admission is valid for four consecutive days, so it covers both days and would cover a fourth if you wanted one.

Day 3, option A — Tianmen Mountain

A different mountain entirely, above Zhangjiajie city rather than out at Wulingyuan, with its own operator and its own ticket. Not to be confused with Tianzi Mountain, which is inside the forest park and which you will already have visited on day one. The two names catch out a remarkable number of people.

Tianmen’s draw is the natural arch near the summit — Tianmen Cave, the “Heaven’s Gate” the mountain is named for, which the district’s records date to the third century. Plus the glass-floored cliff walkways and the road of hairpin bends up the mountainside.

Check the status before you build a day around it. The upper section of the main cable car — middle station to summit — has been out of service since November 2025 and dismantled for reconstruction, with no reopening date announced. The express cable car up to the cave resumed in March 2026 and the mountain’s internal routes have been reorganised around the gap.

This also affects the price. The through ticket that bundles admission, cable car, shuttles and escalators is what visitors actually buy, and while part of the lift system is being rebuilt its fare is a matter of temporary arrangements. What is officially confirmed is the admission component on its own:

Tianmen sits directly above the city, so this is the day to do if you are moving to a city hotel for a morning flight.

Day 3, option B — the Grand Canyon and the glass bridge

The other third day, and the one to pick if the bridge is what brought you here.

Understand the geography first: the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is not in Wulingyuan. It is administratively in Cili County, and your forest park ticket does not work there. It is a separate trip and a separate ticket.

The canyon and the bridge are two tickets, not one: you can walk the canyon without crossing the bridge, but not the other way round. Only the canyon admission has a confirmed official price.

The bridge fee is the clearest example of why this site works the way it does. The last officially traceable figure is a trial price set in 2016; the decisions extending it since then are hosted on a city government domain we cannot reach. A ten-year-old “trial” price with no accessible renewal is not a confirmed price, so we do not print one — even though the number is easy enough to find elsewhere.

Which option to choose

Tianmen if you want a second mountain: an arch, cliff walkways and a view down onto a city. Check what is running first.

The Grand Canyon if the glass bridge is the picture you came for, and you are comfortable buying the bridge fee at the gate without knowing it in advance.

Neither, and stay in the forest park: Huangshizhai on its own cable car, Yangjiajie in the west, or Huanglong Cave and Baofeng Lake inside Wulingyuan — both of which are charged separately from park admission, which is the most common on-the-day disappointment here.

Where to sleep for three days

Two nights in Wulingyuan covers days one and two comfortably. If day three is Tianmen and you fly out afterwards, moving to Zhangjiajie city for the last night saves a transfer at the worst possible hour; where to stay weighs that up properly.
